Pokémon card indexes

How each corner of the market is actually moving. Each index tracks PSA 10 prices for a defined basket of cards, rebased to 100 at the first month the basket trades in enough volume, and is built from matched pairs: only cards that sold in both months count toward that month's move, so the index measures prices rather than which cards happened to trade.

How these are calculated

For each month, every card in the basket that sold in both that month and the one before contributes a price ratio. The median of those ratios is the market's move for the month, and the index chains those moves together from a base of 100.

The median is deliberate: a single record auction or one mis-recorded sale moves an average and cannot move the median of dozens. Matched pairs are equally deliberate, because averaging whatever sold this month against whatever sold last month measures the mix, not the market. Where a month has fewer than five matched pairs the level is carried forward rather than invented. Thin baskets, which rarely trade in consecutive months, are measured by quarter instead and say so.
